Mount Auburn CemeteryFounded in 1831, Mount Auburn Cemetery was America's first landscaped or gardened cemetery, and has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. It's 175 acres are adorned with over 5,500 trees covering over 700 varieties. Thousands of shrubs and herbaceous plants cover the hills, dells, woodlands and clearings. It's a sanctuary for birds and other wildlife in a busy urban environment.

DirectionsFrom I-495 and I-95 (Route 128)
Get on the Mass Pike (I-90) going east towards Boston. Get off at Exit 17 marked "Watertown/Newton" and follow directions below:
From West via Mass. Pike (I-90)
Take Exit 17 marked "Watertown/Newton." Bear left, cross over the Pike and get in the middle lane, following the signs for "Watertown." Take Galen Street .5 mile to Watertown Square. Go straight through onto Mt. Auburn St. (Route 16 East - Cambridge). Go 2.2 miles to the Entrance Gate on your right, just after the Shaws Supermarket on the left.

Hours & Admission
Visitors are welcome every day of the year from 8 AM to 5 PM. From May through September the grounds are open to 7 PM. No admission fee.

Notes & Comments
Mount Auburn is a beautifully landscaped garden which is also a cemetery. The architecture and statues among the plants and trees are magnificent. Not to be missed.
Please note: Photographing funerals is prohibited. A special permit must be obtained for all film making and commercial photography.
